Where We Store Emotions & How to Gently Let Them Go
Where We Store Emotions & How to Gently Let Them Go
Have you ever had a tight neck for days or a nagging headache that just wouldn’t budge, only to realise it started around the same time as an argument or a moment that made you feel powerless?
Our bodies are like closets. When we don’t know where to put our emotions, we stuff them in; behind the ribs, in the lower back, between the shoulder blades. Out of sight, but not out of being.
Unspoken words, lingering hurt, old resentment… they don’t disappear. They settle. Quietly. Until we’re ready to clear them out.
Here’s a gentle body map of emotional storage, and one practical, heart-centered task for each place, like a spring clean for your soul.
1. Head: Loss of Control = Headaches
When life feels chaotic, your mind races and your head pays the price. Like a balloon drifting too high, you need to tether yourself back to earth.
Try: Grounding With Your Senses
Go outside barefoot. Stand on the grass, sand or soil. Wiggle your toes. Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste.
Affirmation: I am safe. I am steady. I am here.
2. Voice and Throat: Oppression = Sore Throat, Tight Jaw
Swallowed words are like unopened letters. They weigh you down.
Try: Free-Flow Journaling or Mirror Talk
Grab a pen. For 10 minutes, write everything you’ve wanted to say—no filter, no grammar check. Then (optional but powerful) read it out loud to yourself in the mirror.
Affirmation: My voice matters. I speak with honesty and care.
3. Neck and Shoulders: Burdens = Tension
Imagine carrying a backpack you didn’t even pack. That’s what emotional burdens feel like—other people’s expectations, old guilt, to-do lists.
Try: Releasing the Backpack
Do 5 slow shoulder rolls, forward and back. Take a warm bath with Epsom salts. As the water drains, picture the weight leaving too.
Affirmation: I carry only what is mine.
4. Heart and Chest: Hurt = Tightness or Heaviness
When your heart hurts, even breathing can feel hard.
Try: Heart-Centered Breathing
Place your hand on your heart. Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 6. Imagine golden light flowing in. See the pain as petals loosening, not walls breaking.
Affirmation: I breathe in love. I release what no longer serves me.
5. Stomach and Intestines: Fear = Cramps or Unease
Fear often shows up in the gut—like butterflies on steroids.
Try: Tea & Stillness
Sip on warm rooibos or chamomile tea, slowly, in silence. Rest your other hand gently on your belly. Let the warmth calm the nervous system.
Affirmation: I trust my path. I feel fear, but I am not fear.
6. Insomnia: Loss of Self = Sleeplessness
When you forget who you are, sleep won’t come.
Try: Night Rituals to Reclaim You
Light a candle and spend 10 minutes doing something that connects you to you—drawing, gentle stretches, listening to your favourite music.
Affirmation: I return to myself. I allow rest.
7. Lower Back: Anger = Stiffness or Pain
Think of anger as a kettle on the boil. If there’s no release, it rattles and spills over.
Try: Move to Release
Put on music with a strong beat. Move your hips, your waist, your whole body. Shake it out. Yell into a pillow if needed. Then sit quietly.
Affirmation: I allow the heat to move through me, not stay in me.
8. Fatigue: Resentment = Constant Tiredness
Resentment is emotional clutter. It drains your energy just by being there.
Try: One Small Declutter
Pick one drawer, inbox, or shelf. Clear it. As you do, mentally clear one lingering resentment. It doesn’t need space anymore.
Affirmation: I choose lightness. I release the weight of old stories.
9. Numbness: Trauma = Disconnection
Trauma can freeze you. The kindest thing you can do is sit with it without force.
Try: Touch and Stillness
Wrap yourself in a blanket. Place both hands on your heart. Close your eyes. Just sit and breathe. No fixing. Just presence.
Affirmation: I am here. I survived. I am healing.
Your body is not betraying you—it’s holding the emotions you haven’t yet had time to process.
Each ache, each tight spot, is a little note asking: Can we release this now?
Start gently. Start where it feels right. The body will thank you. And slowly, your spirit will rise.
